Members of the parliamentary commission of Education, Vocational Training and Sport met this Thursday at LALIGA headquarters in Madrid, where diplomats heard about the damaging effects on Spanish football that the implementation of a so called 'European Super League' might have. President of LALIGA, Javier Tebas, was accompanied by our own President José María del Nido Carrasco, as well as his counterpart at Deportivo Alavés, Alfonso Fernández de Trocóniz, and the Director of Business and Operations at Atlético de Madrid, Óscar Mayo.

Del Nido Carrasco explained that the element of meritocracy should always be respected in sporting competition and insisted that the creation of such an elitist tournament would completely undermine this. He highlighted our successes as a prime example of how meritocracy works, going from playing the Second Division at the start of the century to now ranking among the most successful clubs in European football. Furthermore, he made clear his opposition to this format of competition, defending the benefits of national competitions, and that these should be the avenues that give access to European competitions.
