Sevilla FC Women beat Villarreal CF 3-1 and extend their unbeaten league run to seven games. This was their first home league game of the new year and they were good value for the three points, although Villarreal also had opportunities.

In the first half it was Cristian Toro's side on top, both in general play and in chances created. Toni Payne came close to opening the scoring in the sixth minute, but her effort, following some good build-up play, narrowly missed the target. After fifteen minutes, Martín-Prieto fired an effort against the woodwork, but four minutes later she made up for it with a well-taken header. Lucía's cross from the right-hand side found Martín-Prieto in space and her powerful header gave them a deserved lead. Sevilla FC Women continued to dominate possession, but the visitors looked to get back on level terms and did create some openings. However Toni Payne was the player to come closest to adding to the scoresheet in the first half, but Villarreal keeper Carbonell denied her in a one-on-one situation.

Sevilla FC Women consolidate their 6th-place league position

The away side came into the second half hunting for an equaliser, but Esther Sullastres, wearing the captain's armband in the absence of Amanda Sampedro, was on hand to deny them. Débora García tried her luck from long range before Gemma Gili gave Sevilla FC Women a two-goal cushion. In the 66th minute, she beat Carbonell with shot from the edge of the box to the top-left corner, following a swift counter attack. Ten minutes later, Kanteh cut the deficit in half, but Payne struck late on to restore the two-goal advantage and ensure a comfortable finish to the match. She was then taken off for Alba López to make her debut having graduated through the academy.

Another victory for Sevilla FC Women sees them move up to 25 points and maintain the sixth-place spot. Their next match is also at home, against SD Eibar at 18:00 CET on Sunday, and will be the final match of the first half of the season.
