A match between Sevilla and Arsenal cannot be played without acknowledging the link that exists between both clubs - José Antonio Reyes. He was and continues to be a Sevilla FC legend having played a key role in our rebirth during the 21st century. He joined Arsenal in January 2004, becoming a part of the squad that is now referred to as 'The Invincibles' having not lost a single game during the 2003/04 season. During their Champions League visit to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, Arsenal paid official tribute to Reyes. First through head coach Mikel Arteta and later through the club's board at the official dinner.

Arteta, after appearing in front of the media at the pre-match press conference, presented a bouquet of flowers in front of the memorial dedicated to Reyes at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. Spaniard Arteta knew Reyes very well having been a part of the same national squad and shared a room on many occasions. During the conference, he said "I know he would be very proud of tomorrow's game."

Later on, Arsenal Executive Vice-Chair, Tim Lewis, and José Castro exchanged official shirts. José Castro received an Arsenal number nine shirt with Reyes on the back before returning Reyes's number ten Sevilla jersey.
