Following their convincing win in Vilnius on Thursday against Zalgiris in the third qualifying round, Sevilla have won the past 16 two-legged knockout rounds in the Europa League, equalling a Spanish record set between 1984 and 1992.

Thursday´s convincing win gave Pablo Machín´s Sevilla more than just qualification to the final play-off round which they must win to go into the group stage; it has also put them as the team with the most two-legged knockout round wins in a continental trophy.

Sevilla last lost a two-legged knockout round in the Europa League in August 2011, then managed by Marcelino García Toral; in this case it was a defeat against Hannover 96 (a 2-1 defeat in Germany before drawing 1-1 in Seville). Since then, they have won 16 knockout rounds in a row: six in 2013/2014, four in 2014/2015, another four in 2015/2016, and the two they have just won this summer against Újpest and Zalgiris.

This run equals a Spanish record set by Real Madrid, who also won 16 consecutive two-legged knockout rounds between 1984 and 1992.
