The sporting director has no qualms with being patient: 'I prefer to take my time to make the right decision for Sevilla'

On Monday afternoon, Monchi offered a talk at the University of Sevilla to close the Master in Sports Journalism course organised by Sevilla FC. Monchi spoke about the current situation at Sevilla, notably choosing the new manager: 'In football, there are some deals which one day are 1% done and then the next they're sealed. And vice-versa: there are some deals you have 99% done and then they fall through. Such an important decision cannot be taken lightly. I prefer to take my time to make the right decision for Sevilla. We have to bring in the manager who will adapt best to our needs.'

Going further into the process of choosing the new manager, he stated 'I have been here for two months and there is a lot of information I need to process and analyse together to make the right decision. I have to analyse the situation we are in, the demands of the club, the past we come from, the future we want, the players we have, who is going to come and go, our economic possibilities... who do I need? It's not as easy as just saying bring in Bordalás, Rudi García, Lopetegui, Roberto Martínez… Names aren't the most important thing. We have to analyse the circumstances and the moment we are in.'

Monchi also spoke about his previous post: 'What caught my eye in Rome was the football and the status of the sporting director, it was similar to Spain. I wanted to win the Italians' love and earn the professionals' respect. On a personal level, I improved. It was difficult but I take positives from it.'
