Julen Lopetegui arrived at Sevilla FC just over a year and a half ago. Until the Basque's arrival, the Nervionenses had only really played one-off games in finals, whether that be in Europe or the Copa del Rey. However, due to the new format of the Copa del Rey whereby matches are decided in one leg, and the effect that COVID-19 had on the Europa League, Lopetegui has had to adjust the team to knock-out matches in which there are no second chances.

As a result, Sevilla have played eleven such matches with no second bite at the cherry. A defeat means elimination and there is no second leg to rectify a poor result in the first. There has been six such encounters in the Copa del Rey, four in the UEFA Europa League and one in the UEFA Super Cup

The level of the opponents has ranged right from the Tercera División in Spain as is the case for Bergantiños, Escobedo, and Ciudad de Lucena, to European powerhouses such as Manchester United, Inter Milan, or the Champions League holders, Bayern Munich. In these eleven matches, Lopetegui's Sevilla have come out on top in nine and lost two - the 19/20 Copa del Rey Round of 16 against Mirandés and the Super Cup final in Budapest. Only against Mirandés did the team fall to defeat within 90 minutes as it took Bayern extra time to defeat Lopetegui's men.
