It is a sad day for Sevilla FC. This Tuesday morning, Manuel Costas passed away at 78 years of age. Costas, born in Panxón, arrived at Sevilla at only twenty years of age and would end up playing ten years for the first team. Manuel came to the Club as a striker, but a loan move to Recreativo de Huelva would change his career forever.

Costas came back as a centre-back looking to win a place in Ignacio Eizaguirre's side, a team that had just lost the important Paco Gallego to FC Barcelona. He did so and more, becoming a stalwart in defence for the next nine seasons. It was a topsy-turvy era for Sevilla, with two relegations to the Second Division and the Club even managing to finish third in the First Division under Merkel.

His last game for Sevilla was the famous duel against Linares in 73/74 when the team managed to avoid relegation to the Third Division. In a strange set of circumstances, Costas would actually end up moving to Linares, where he would retire. He returned to Sevilla following his retirement and remained at the Club for over half a century. In 2015, before a match between Sevilla-Celta, he was given a golden insignia in recognition of his 279 as a blanquirrojo.

Everyone at Sevilla FC sends their condolences to Manuel Costas' friends and family. Before the game against Real Valladolid on Saturday, the team will hold a minute's silence to remember Manuel and Felipe Rodríguez Alonso who passed away yesterday. Rest in peace.
