Uncertainty for Simon Kjaer who will have to wait until the World Cup Playoffs to find out if his international side will make it to the Russia 2018 World Cup following a 1-1 draw with Romania. Denmark were conservative from the start of their match and made no moves in the first half. Montenegro's loss in Poland meant even a draw would guarantee a playoff place; with tables as they were, Hareide's men had to hold on to a result.

Eriksen took the responsibility of firing home from the penalty spot after Ganea brought down a Danish player in his own area. Just minutes later, Ganea saw a second yellow card and was sent off. Kjaer's side could not take advantage of their extra man, and in the 88th minute, Deac found an equaliser.

Simon Kjaer, who started and was captain as usual, is now due to fight until the very end to make it to the World Cup through the playoffs. His side has finished second in Group E, behind Poland.

Denmark's team was as follows: Schmeichel; Durmisi, Christensen, Kjær, Dalsgaard; Delaney, Kvist, Eriksen; Sisto, Bendtner (Dolberg, m.69), Poulsen (Schöne, m.83).

Romania's: Tatarusanu; Balasu, Chiricha, Grigore, Ganea, Baluta (Tucudean, m.83), Hoban, Stanciu, Budescu (Bancu, m.66), Deac, Andone (Keseru, m.70).
