After a meeting of the Executive Commitee in Ljubljana, UEFA have announced the host stadiums for the different European finals for the 2020/21 season. It was a day that had been marked in the calendar of Sevilla FC, who faced competition from the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi in Georgia to see who would stage the final of the UEFA Europa League for the 2020/21 season. UEFA opted for the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, the home of the five-time winners, Sevilla FC: 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium is named after the beloved president who sadly passed away before seeing the stadium before its completiton. The stadium was completed during the tenure of Ramón de Carranza, who promised to have the Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium finished before he passed away. He stuck to his word and now, 61 years later, the stadium continues to live on. The first game played at the stadium by Sevilla was against Real Jaén.

The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán has went from an ambitious project to one of the best stadiums on both the national and the international scene. There have been many landmark moments throughout its sixty years. In 1975, with Montes Cabeza as president, the stands in the top part behind the goals were shut, and in 1982, work for the roof and the mosaic of the stadium began. Then, in 2015, under the presidency of José Castro, new and ambitious reforms were launched to continue to equip the Sánchez-Pizjuán with the best infrastructure possible.

There have been many historic matches played here at the home of Sevilla FC here in Nervión, none more so than the 1982 World Cup semi-final between France and Germany, and also the 1986 European Cup final which was won by Steaua Bucharest. Many of the biggest and best clubs in world football over the years have graced the pitch in Nervión, and many have come up short in front of the loyal Sevilla fanbase, who won the '12th Man' prize for their unconditional support to the Spanish national team. Speaking of which, Spain are unbeaten in Nervión in 27 games. The stadium continues to move with the times and is now undergoing more construction work, including creating more space in the Preferencia stand, which will without doubt become more obvious, and make the stadium even more appealing for the UEFA Europa League final on 26th May 2021.
