SEVILLA FC CELEBRATE THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LEAGUE TITLE WON IN BARCELONA

A 1-1 draw away at FC Barcelona on 31st March 1946 was enough to secure the league title, with a total of 36 points

Today, on Holy Wednesday, Sevilla FC are celebrating an anniversary. On this day in 1946, the club became league champions for the first and only time so far in its history. It was the third time that Sevilla FC had won a national trophyafter winning the cup in both 1935 and 1939, with the league title following seven years later. Today, 31st March 2021, the club are celebrating the 75th anniversary of that league title, which was secured at a packed Les Cortsgiving the event the importance it deserved

So, in the final match of the season, in Barcelona, the only two sides who could become champions would face each other: FC Barcelona and Sevilla FC. The Catalan sidewith 34 points, were the hostswhile the Nervionenseswith 35 pointsonly needed a draw to secure their first league title. After just seven minutes, Juan Araujo opened the scoring for the visitors. Bravo went on to equalise in the 63rd minute, but, with the hosts unable to find a winner, Sevilla FC held on and became champions. Ramón Encinas was the manager who led the side to glorywith 14 wins (28 points) and eight draws

The Sevilla FC starting line-up on that fateful day was as follows: Busto; Joaquín, Villalonga; Alconero, Antúnez, Eguiluz; López, Arza, Araujo, Herrera and Campos. The return to Seville was an eventful occasion. The travelling partywho went via bus, celebrated their league title whenever they stopped on their way back to Andalusia. Upon arriving in Seville, the balconies had been decked out for the occasion and the champions were welcomed at the city hall by the city council, the mayor and a huge crowd of fans who packed the streets. The presentation of the cup came seven days laterat a testimonial match between Sevilla FC and Granada CF at the Estadio de Nervión
