Europe in general, and the Champions League in particularare returning to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. On Wednesday, over two months since our last fixture in this tournament, Europe's elite competition returns to our stadium, with a Round of 16 First Leg fixture against Borussia Dortmund. This is not their first trip to face the Nervionensesas the two sides played against each other in the UEFA Europa League Group Stage back in 2010. Therefore, Borussia Dortmund are amongst the ten German sides who have played against Sevilla FC in European competition.

The first German side to be drawn to face the Blanquirrojos was Kaiserslautern all the way back in 1982in the UEFA Cup Round of 16Sevilla won 1-0 in the first leg at homebut were knocked out with a 4-0 loss in the second leg. It would be over 20 years until the next match against a German outfit, with Alemannia Aachen losing 2-0 in Nervión in the UEFA Cup Group Stage in 2004. The following season, 2005/06, the year of the UEFA Cup win in Eindhoven, Mainz 05 were the opponents in the First Round, the round before the Group Stage. A 2-0 first-leg win in Germany was enough to send the Nervionenses into the Group Stage, with a 0-0 draw in Sevilla in the second leg.

Before the famous tie against Schalke 04, Sevilla FC had already faced Kaiserslautern, Alemannia Aachen and Mainz 05

Then, a name that is both difficult to spell and pronounce. However, Gelsenkirchen will remain in the hearts of every Sevillista forever. There, at the home of Schalke 04Sevilla FC took a 0-0 draw back to the Sánchez-Pizjuán in the UEFA Cup Semi Final in 2006, with 3,000 travelling Sevillistas driving the team on. Back in Nervión, one goal changed everythingwith Antonio Puerta's left-footed extra-time drive sending the Nervionenses into a European final for the first time in their historywhich they indeed won in Eindhoven

Stuttgart were the next German opponents on the list. In fact, they faced the Nervionenses three times, with one UEFA Cup fixture in 2008 preceding two Champions League Group Stage fixtures in the 09/10 season. Sevilla picked up two wins and a draw in those matches. The run of good results ended the following seasonwith Hannover 96 winning a Europa League Play-Off in 2010. Three years later, the Blanquirrojos beat Freiburg twice in the UEL Group Stage. Borussia Monchengladbach would then be drawn against Sevilla in successive group stages, in the Europa League in 2014/15 and the Champions League in 2015/16. The Nervionenses won three and drew one on their way to winning the Europa League on both occasions.

Borussia Monchengladbach are the most frequent German opponents, on four occasions

The tenth and final opponents from Germany are no less than Bayern Munich, who have faced the Blanquirrojos three times since 2018. The Bavarians progressed in a Champions League Quarter Final in April 2018, before their extra-time win in the UEFA Super Cup Final five months ago in Budapest. In total, there have been 23 matches between the Nervionenses and German sideswith twelve winssix drawsfive losses32 goals scored and 21 conceded. In just over 48 hours, Sevilla FC will face another test from German opposition as they look to reach the Champions League Quarter Finals for the third time in their history.
