May is spoken of as being the month in which the stars align for sevillistas, but the truth is that June also presents opportunities to look into the past with a smile. A decade ago today, Sevilla FC lifted their fourth Copa del Rey towards the Madrid sky. It took place in the Santiago Bernabéu, against Getafe and with a winning goal from Kanouté.

It was a glorious season, which began with the triumph of winning the European Super Cup in Monaco and in which the team also won the UEFA Cup in Glasgow and secured third place in LaLiga. It was not an easy victory against the azulones , but what will endure from that great day, beyond the trophy itself, is the demonstration of sevillismo which captivated Madrid. After finals in Eindhoven, Glasgow and Monaco, sevillismo was met with a trophy to play for in Madrid.

There was little need to be extra resourceful, nor to splash the cash to watch the team lift a trophy. Far less was required to take part in such a special day, even for those outside the vicinity. As such, entire families came to the Spanish capital by air, by road and by train, to enjoy an incomparable day, for history was to take charge of providing new opportunities.

Everything worked out perfectly and some 80,000 sevillistas descended on Madrid in white and red. And it didn't even stop there, as less than 24 hours later there was an unmissable event in Nervión. It was imperative to be back home in time to cheer on Sevilla Atlético, who did not disappoint and achieved their second promotion to the Segunda División, vanquishing Burgos in the final play-off round. Ending a simply spectacular weekend, two open-top buses celebrated an unforgettable end-of-season around the streets of Seville.
